Recent reports have stated that temperatures across the Mediterranean are nearing the highest ever recorded. Although it was 1-2C warmer then than it is today, the world prospered. All we need is a government prepared to make sure that its national planning policies are implemented. Housing estates are rightly resisted in the countryside, as they do not generally fit in, but a modest amount of development can be integrated. Together, they could provide sites for tens of thousands of homes without harming their surroundings. The reality is that there are very few villages, hamlets or settlements in the countryside that could not accommodate a small amount of new housing. Sadly, however, most local planning authorities react to knee-jerk opposition to any building in the countryside and many in the Government’s Planning Inspectorate, coming from a local government background, also react as if all rural development were banned. ![]() None of these objectives precludes all development on the Green Belt, and the Government’s countryside policies in the NPPF similarly do not preclude such development. I keep hearing about a shortage of new houses, but can’t imagine that this is a problem in north Hampshire. Here, new houses are being built on great swathes of green land, including an 18-hole golf course. SIR– Rishi Sunak appears not to have been near Basingstoke recently. But more often than not, there has been a lack of affordable housing – and rarely is the required infrastructure provided. Most brownfield sites are within urban areas, which means that they are close to existing infrastructure.įor too long our valuable green-field sites have been favoured as they are easier to build on.
